The hardest part of loving an adult child with an addiction is the silence.
You stop inviting friends over. You lie about how your child is doing. You carry the crushing weight of shame, wondering what you did wrong. I spent years hiding my daughter’s alcoholism from the world. But isolation only feeds the despair. When I finally started speaking out, I found a community of parents just like me, fighting the same silent battles
Why We Choose to Hide
Shame is a powerful silencer. As parents, we are conditioned to celebrate our children’s milestones—their degrees, their jobs, their relationships. When those things are replaced by rehab stays, evictions, and legal troubles, we don’t know how to talk about it.
We worry about judgment from neighbours. We worry about extended family members offering unhelpful, simplistic advice. So, we withdraw. We make excuses for why our child didn’t show up to Christmas. We smile through the pain while our hearts are breaking behind closed doors.
The Toxic Cost of Isolation
Keeping the secret doesn’t protect your child; it only destroys your own mental health (pp. 1-2). Isolation breeds anxiety, depression, and physical illness (pp. 1-2). When you pretend everything is fine, you cut yourself off from the very support systems that can keep you upright.
Breaking the silence is the first step toward reclaiming your peace. Here is how you can start to open up safely:
- Find a curated community: You don’t have to tell the whole world. Start by finding support groups specifically for families of addicts.
- Stop covering up the consequences: Let the truth exist. If someone asks how your child is, it is okay to say, “They are struggling right now, and I am focused on my own well-being.”
- Acknowledge your own trauma: Give yourself permission to admit that this situation is hurting you deeply .
