If I could go back to the days when my daughter was at her absolute rock-bottom, I would whisper this to myself:

“Take a breath, Faye. She is on her own path, and you cannot walk it for her. Focus on keeping your own heart steady. You will survive this.” Since I cannot go back in time, I am saying those exact words to you today. You are doing the best you can. Be gentle with yourself.

The Release of the Invisible Steering Wheel

For years, I lived with the agonizing belief that if I just said the right words, found the perfect rehab, or watched her closely enough, I could steer my daughter away from destruction. It felt like I was holding an invisible steering wheel to her life, terrified that if I let go, she would crash.

The hardest truth a parent will ever learn is that our adult children own their own journeys. We cannot live their lives, we cannot make their choices, and we cannot force their healing. Letting go of that invisible steering wheel isn’t giving up; it is accepting reality.

Whispering Peace to Your Heart Today

Thank you for following my journey here over the last six weeks. If you are standing in the middle of a loved one’s rock-bottom right now, please read these reminders carefully:

  • Separate your path from theirs: Their relapse or struggle is not a reflection of your worth or your future peace.
  • Be gentle with your mistakes: You did not have a manual for this. Forgive yourself for the times you stumbled or yelled.
  • Keep your heart steady: Your primary job in this life is to protect your own mental and physical well-being.

You Are Not Walking Alone

Since I cannot step back into the past to help my younger self, my life’s mission is to help you survive your present.

If my words have resonated with you, please visit my website via the bio link to explore my books, custom meditation videos, and 24/7 AI chat support. I am here for you.
